Former BND chief held in German espionage and treason investigation

German federal prosecutors said former BND chief August Hanning and a former aide were placed in pretrial detention after their arrests on espionage and treason allegations. Investigators estimate that more than 2,000 secret documents may have been stolen and passed to foreign intelligence services between 2010 and 2023; Azerbaijan denied a media report naming it as a possible recipient.
