EU to prepare support mission for Lebanese army, in favor of UNIFIL extension

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced plans for a support mission for Lebanon’s army and security forces, while also expressing support for extending the mandate of UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.

Why it matters. Lebanese security forces and international peacekeepers are concerned about a potential security vacuum in southern Lebanon following the end of UNIFIL’s mandate.
