US Student Designs 45,000-Pound Magnet Storage Stands for World’s First Electron-Ion Collider

A US student, Robert Desjardins, designed four-tier storage stands to support up to 45,000 pounds of superconducting magnets for the world’s first electron-ion collider, saving the project about $420,000.

Why it matters. The storage stands will help preserve and reuse magnets from the previous collider, enabling the new electron-ion collider to operate more efficiently.
