Supertanker carrying 2 million barrels of oil struck by mine in Strait of Hormuz

A supertanker carrying over two million barrels of crude oil was struck by a mine and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. The IRGC stated the vessel attempted to use an unauthorized route and claimed the Strait of Hormuz is closed, warning against violations of Iranian passage rules.

Why it matters. The incident affects global oil shipping and energy markets, as the Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for about 20% of global oil trade, and further disruptions could impact supply chains and prices.
