WHO designates Omicron variant as variant of concern

On 26 November 2021, the World Health Organization designated the SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529 as a variant of concern and named it Omicron, based on advice from its Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution. The designation followed reports of increased cases in South Africa and concerns about the variant's mutations potentially affecting transmissibility, severity, and immune escape.

Why it matters. The designation signals a potential shift in the global COVID-19 pandemic trajectory, prompting countries to assess public health measures, travel policies, and vaccine strategies in response to a new variant with uncertain characteristics.
