CMB.TECH launches world's first ammonia-powered bulker on maiden voyage

Belgium's CMB.TECH has sent the 210,000 dwt Mineral Europa on its maiden voyage to Australia, marking the first deployment of an ammonia-powered dry bulk carrier. The vessel, built at CSSC's Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, is the first of 21 ammonia-powered ships planned for delivery through 2029, including 18 bulkers, one containership and two chemical tankers.

Why it matters. This milestone demonstrates operational viability of ammonia as a marine fuel, potentially accelerating decarbonization efforts in the global shipping industry which accounts for nearly 3% of annual greenhouse gas emissions.
