U.S. Navy and Shield AI commit $400 million to X-BAT AI-piloted VTOL fighter aircraft

The U.S. Navy executed a $150 million modification to its Other Transaction agreement with Shield AI for the X-BAT aircraft, matched by $150 million in Shield AI capital. Combined with prior $50 million government and private investments, total public and private commitments to X-BAT reach $400 million. The aircraft is designed for vertical takeoff and landing from ships and austere sites.

Why it matters. The investment advances a runway-independent combat aircraft that could enhance U.S. naval power projection from non-traditional platforms, affecting future carrier air wing composition and expeditionary strike capabilities.
