WHO confirms Ebola vaccine trial to begin in DR Congo within weeks
The World Health Organization announced that the first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to start by the end of October 2026. The trial will test Ervebo, a vaccine approved for the Zaire strain, for potential cross-protection against the Bundibugyo species driving the current outbreak, which has exceeded 9,000 cases and 4,000 deaths.
Why it matters. The trial addresses a critical gap in medical countermeasures for the Bundibugyo Ebola strain, which currently lacks approved vaccines or treatments, and could inform future outbreak responses in Central Africa.
