Japan to invest $21 billion in two new GlobalFoundries semiconductor fabs in New York

GlobalFoundries has been selected to build and operate two new 300mm semiconductor fabs at its Malta, New York site, with Japan providing up to $21 billion in funding under a U.S.-Japan initiative. The first fab is expected to come online in 2029 and add approximately 900,000 wafers of annual U.S. manufacturing capacity, with a second fab adding similar capacity. The project is expected to create about 27,000 construction and ecosystem jobs and over 1,000 high-skilled manufacturing jobs.

Why it matters. This investment significantly expands U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity, strengthening supply chains for automotive, industrial and infrastructure markets while creating high-skilled jobs in New York's Capital Region.
