No UN Secretary-General candidate has support of all five Security Council permanent members in latest straw poll

The latest UN straw poll for secretary-general showed none of the seven candidates received backing from all five permanent Security Council members (US, Russia, China, UK, France), with leading candidates each receiving two discouragement votes from the powers. The poll used red ballots for the first time to distinguish P5 votes, and officials indicated the US position remains under refinement.

Why it matters. The selection process affects global leadership of the UN during a period of reform pressure and geopolitical tension, with implications for international cooperation on peace, security, and multilateral institutions.
